About Us

The Kongu descendants of Namakkal District, (part of Kongu Belt) Tamil Nadu were brought to Peninsular Malaysia by the British towards the end of 19th and before the middle of 20th Century to work in the rubber plantations and public sector.

The majority of the Namakkal descendants who were living around Kuala Lumpur were serving in the Public Works Dept and Central Electricty Board. By 1950s they were plagued with socio-economic problems and they realised the pressing need to resolve the issues through organised channel. They looked forward to their counterpart in Singapore who had formed Namakkal Taluk Welfare Association to address similar issues.

The first meeting was held on 11-3-1956 at the Indian Association Building Kampong Atap, Kuala Lumpur. More than 100 descendants of Namakkal around Kuala Lumpur turned up for the meeting and formed the Namakkal Taluk Welfare Associaion. The founder members were Mr Sellamuthu, Mr Maruthu Gaunder, Mr Vaiyapuri Chettiar and a business man Mr Subramaniam Pillay.

Since then the Kongu descendants of Thiruchangode, Karur, Erode and Coimbatore are also taken in as members and the association name changed to Persatuan Kebajikan Namakkal Malaysia. Again in 2016 the by-laws were amended to include the entire Kongu community from Kongu Belt and to accommodate this change the name too changed to Persatuan Kebajikan Kongu Malaysia (Kongu Welfare Association of Malaysia) in August 2017. Presently the association has 18 active branches with more than 12,000 members.

Over the years the Malaysian Kongu community has progressively evolved from a labour workforce to professionals and self-employed. Generally the association provides community based cultural and social welfare development, educational guidance and interest free loans to the needy students to pursue higher education, entrepreneurial and empowerment programmes and ultimately serving Kongu community in Malaysia.
