The Kongu descendants of Namakkal District, (part of Kongu Belt) Tamil Nadu were brought to Peninsular Malaysia by the British towards the end of 19th and before the middle of 20th Century to work in the rubber plantations and public sector. The majority of the Namakkal descendants who were living around Kuala Lumpur were serving in the Public Works Dept and Central Electricty Board. By 1950s they were plagued with socio-economic problems and they realised the pressing need to resolve the issues through organised channel. They looked forward to their counterpart in Singapore who had formed Namakkal Taluk Welfare Association to address similar issues.
